Regulation vs. Prohibition: What We Talk About, When We Talk About Roe

I’m going to use Submitted to a Candid World‘s 100th post to talk about one of the most important social issues facing us today: the legality of abortion.

Political choices have consequences. While this is not a shocking perspective, in a world where the minority’s morality has become central to our legislative agenda, we tend to forget it. If we ban gay marriage, we forget about the woman who now can’t visit her partner in the hospital, because she’s not “married” to her; if we debate war, we forget about the soldiers and civilians who will die; and if we ban abortion, we talk about the fetuses who will die, but not about the women who will die. The linked article makes a clear and often-forgotten point: to ban abortion is to accept that women will die, where they need not.
