Republicans already mock the Barack Obama campaign for being more about the person than the nation, and Hillary “Democrats” mock the campaign for being overly arrogant. What deft symbolic gesture could sum up and play into both the concerns?
Ah! I have it. How about a new “campaign seal” that manages to both imply Obama is already president, and border on cult-of-personality camp? Something like..

…that? Ugh. Albeit a well-run group, sometimes the campaign doesn’t think these things through. Let’s hope this doesn’t become a big deal.
I think this will be fodder for the people who have already decided to dislike Obama. Any undecided’s will be indifferent, I think.
Posted by oneiroi | June 22, 2008, 2:31 amWhile I hesitate to say nothing will come of it, I’m inclined to agree with oneiroi—Obama won’t lose too many votes just for this.
Posted by Radioactive afikomen | June 22, 2008, 3:37 amI don’t think the implication is actually there: people that think the worst of Obama decided to say that it was there, and people who heard the claim simply accepted it without thinking it through.
It also doesn’t help that the claim that it is explicitly the Presidential Seal is wrong.
Posted by Bad | June 23, 2008, 8:44 amI think a lot of undecided people want to know whether liking Obama makes them cult members. They want to warm up to him as a policymaker but frankly find it disturbing how many women faint at rallies, how he seems to be running for Messiah, etc.
This seal could really creep them out.

I need to stop watching Arrested Development.
