Submitted to a Candid World

Colin Powell & the “Good People” of the Bush Administration

Eight years ago, moderate Republican (read: socially liberal, fiscally conservative) friends of mine defended Governor George W. Bush to me by saying that, regardless of his dubious personal character and damning incuriosity, he’d be sure to “surround himself with good people” – like Colin Powell – thus guaranteeing a well-informed and intelligent presidency, in spite of the point man’s obvious deficiencies.

As a defense of Governor/Candidate Bush, this talking point obviously left much to be desired: it amounted to a tacit confession that Bush was, as his opponents styled him, a few cowboys short of a rodeo, and it left open the obvious rebuttal. Maybe Bush would surround himself with good people… but Gore was, of his own merits, a good person. Why settle for secondhand talent?

Unfortunately, today, we all know how this story ended. In 2008, you can walk into any Barnes & Noble, take two steps, and find at least one display table covered in the tell-all memoirs of the “good people” who Bush systematically ignored, then forced out of office (Against All Enemies, The Terror Presidency, Fair Game), stacked next to investigative journalists’ accounts of the corrupting influence of the real power behind the throne (Angler). This should be no surprise. In an administration defined by a distrust of earned knowledge and an embrace of outcome-based fact-finding (“we want to invade Iraq; what can we invent to make that sound palatable?”), there is no place for intelligent men and women who put country before agenda.

Colin Powell was one of the first to go, another bright career – like Tony Blair, Sandra Day O’Connor, and (to a certain extent) John McCain – sadly tainted by its brush with a dishonest administration. Today, he spoke out, endorsing Barack Obama as the one candidate not likely to repeat Bush’s mistakes.

Bush ignored his “good people.” America paid the price. We can’t afford to do the same this time around. America, listen to Colin Powell. He’s been there. He knows what’s at stake.

Note, too: Powell strikes a tone echoed by many newspaper endorsements. Palin was the kiss of death.

Comment by Ames

It’s interesting that an ancient history, rather indirect association with a “domestic terrorist” is painted as poor judgement, but selecting a governor with no experience on a national stage isn’t questioned by the Repubs.

Comment by Ian

Powell failed us all when he failed to stand up to Bush regarding the invasion of Iraq. He thought he could shave the truth and it would be alright. He will live with blood on his hands for the rest of his life for that, and he knows it.

I’m glad he endorsed Obama, particularly that he mentioned that Obama is a Christian and that it DOESN’T MATTER if he is a Muslim. It will be decades before the GOP is brought to that level of sanity, if ever, though.

Comment by Blue Gal

Today I lose all respect I had for Colin Powell. I agree that BO will be a “transformational” character. The problem is the transformation will be disastrous.

Comment by Dale

Be careful, Powell. Why? Because the republicans, will and try to “Swift-Boat”, you………….

Comment by calvin

Mr.Powell, I sincerely question your judgement, especially since you were a major contributor to the weakness of our defense intellegence. I challenge you or anyone else reading this comment and especially “Candid World” to approve this comment so that the following two simple questions can be answered:

(1) What is the name of the Physician / Nurse, who delivered Mr. Obama in Hawaii and the hospital?

(2) Why was a forged birth certificate document (short form) put on the Obama Website as a real document, when forensic document experts determined it to be false? If you dispute these facts then permit these examiners to view (long form in Hawaii) it in front of independent observers for our central florida voters, only if you believe this document to be real!

Comment by Vic S.

Vic, for Christ’s sake. You’re not serious, are you? The simple point is this: if you have extraordinary proof that Obama is NOT a “natural-born citizen,” please feel free to offer it here. If you odn’t, please don’t pretend that the burden of proof is on me. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I suggest you get on it.

PS – if you’re drinking the TexasDarlin Koolaid still, don’t. The legal position advocated by “Judah Benjamin” is flat-out wrong. Unlike TD, we don’t censor comments here. So if you have that proof, feel free to come back.

As for Dale, I’m sorry you think Barack won’t be good for America. Why?

Comment by Ames

Vic, please provide us with the name of the doctor or nurse who delivered Mr. McCain in the hospital, and we will immediately start on your request. While you are at it, why not supply the name of the doctor or nurse who delivered the other 98 senators, the 438 members of the House, George Bush and Dick Cheney. For that matter, what is the name of the doctor or nurse that delivered YOU?

Comment by Ian

Powell is a great American hero, that was used by Bush… that’s why he dissociated himself from the administration.
In response to Mccain’s latest:
Everyone in American knows that the real “underdog”… is the black guy.
Here’s the problem… anyone at this point who thinks Obama is a) a socialist, b) a terrorist, c) the second coming of Christ… are all blinded by their biases. Just because Obama wants to give hard working Middle-Class Americans tax cuts by investments made by the wealthiest 5%, this is somehow a bad thing? This is what Adma Smith actually said government would have to do from time to time… government has to step in when clear dochotomies form between the uppoer and lower classes. Think of this as a investment… do not ship jobs overseas… reinvest in Americans and offer THEM jobs, not southeast Asian telemarketers our outsourced jobs. The 2000 bucks we will get, will go towards affordable healthcare… is being able to afford health insurance a bad thing to you? Anyone who thinks Obama is a socialist doesn’t even realize that he is a pure capitalist that recognizes that Americans are hurting. You also think that BLACK people are lazy, and unwilling to work when given the opportunity. This thinking biases your hiring practices, and makes you develop preconceived judgments about the people you are willing to hire, and those you are not. This implicit practice of active racism MUST STOP!

Comment by Daniel

How is Barack Obama going to prevent jobs from leaving the country? Does he oppose NAFTA/CAFTA? Does he support putting more tarriffs on imported goods? Will he support more subsidies for American industries? About the only thing I’ve heard that he promises to do is to raise taxes on all companies making over $250,000 ( my opinion – they will be so burdened by the higher taxes that they will have to ship the jobs overseas in order to stay competitive on the global marketplace). Will somebody please explain to me how exactly he plans on creating new jobs and preserving existing ones? This is truly an open, honest question, I really want to know!

Comment by Daniel

Thank you, General Powell, for your intelligent rational as to why Barack Obama should be the next President of the United States. I am amazed and terrified that the American people would support a candidate who gave no consideration to choosing a running mate in Governor Palin—little experience, failed leadership in the state of Alaska (natural gas pipeline; $22 million dollar bridge to nowhere; a husband that mettled in state policy even though he was not the elected official; and abuse of power)…..Please keep telling us Senator McCain and Governor Palin how qualified you are and we will keep “rolling our eyes” at you. John McCain had a lot going for him a decade ago, but that decade is long gone. John McCain/Sarah Palin—-”thanks, but no thanks!”

Comment by Tina Morris

Ed note: Daniel (#9) is not the same as Daniel (#10) :)

Comment by Ames

lol that someone is asking to see a birth certificate. The dumbing of America.

Comment by gabe

The big socialist has been endorsed by the big wmd liar. Americas future looks scary.

Comment by john

Powell’s endorsement means nothing. He contributed 1 other time to a Democrat and guess what, he was black also. Also, when McCain needed money for his campaign in 2007, Powell donated money to his campaign. What happened to this “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” I guess Powell is another hypocrite.

Comment by Brandon

Brandon, just because Powell’s decision overlaps with race doesn’t mean that it’s because of race. And it’s unsurprising that someone would change his mind about McCain over the past year. The man went from a hero to just another Republican shill, all in one summer. If I were a bit more centrist, I would have donated to keep McCain alive in 2007, but I’d probably be back to writing a site like this in 2008. McCain squandered his capital with the moderate GOP. That Powell’s regretting his donations in 2007 is no shocker.

Comment by Ames

And John – both “socialist” and “wmd liar” are wrong. I picture Powell as caught in a bad situation: he was told that Iraq had WMDs. He didn’t believe it, but he couldn’t prove otherwise. Bush duped EVERYONE in the run-up to the Iraq War. As for “Socialist,” I’ve yet to hear why Obama is a socialist, except that flinging names is the only strategy that McCain has left to him.

Comment by Ames

General Powell is lookign for a job and knows that McCain is not hiring Bush retreads. For Powell not to endorse McCain, a fellow veteran and not at all Bush supporter is quite stratge. Yes he is trying to come clean after he failed to resign in protest for his strong anti-war feelings. I guess all principles are gone and on with politics.

Comment by Slavko

Well… that was some switch and some payback for the slight…

Washington’s corruption at play.

Wanna see corruption?… Daytona Beach has earned the dubious honor of becoming one of the most corrupt cities in the United States. Corruption is so ingrained and so well organized that even the people in charge of prosecuting it are under control of the people benefiting from it.

From the purchase of overpriced land from political cronies, to the sale of the personal residency of a city commissioner to the city by over twice its just value, to the financing of personal hobbies and indulgences of tycoons at taxpayer expense, Daytona Beach has turned into Capone’s Chicago.

The end result is a city in despair, high unemployment, low morale, rampant crime, homeless roaming the streets and an overworked police force that can’t keep up.

Comment by Daytona News

Ames, I was pointing out that Powell said he is still a Republican and Obama goes against all our principles. He is only supporting him because he is black, because the only other time he played the other side if the fence is for another Black Democrat. Are you that blind to see that this is the only reason he is doing this? Obama has changed all his stances since the primary, so you can use that against McCain. McCain isn’t tied to anti American leaders and didn’t lie to Obama about campaign financing. Your candidate is going to outspend McCain at least 6-1 with his propaganda. Hopefully, the American people are not as gullible as you. You really think he is going to give a tax cut to 95% of the people, universal health care, and pull out of Iraq. Come On People!!!!!

Comment by Brandon

Obama never lied about campaign financing. He said he’d talk over taking public financing with McCain; he never said he’d do it. Backing away after a promise of fair negotiation is a bit of a lawyerly move, but it isn’t prima facie lying.

And, Republican does NOT always mean conservative. Powell was a small state government Reagan Republican, uninterested in social issues. Today’s Republicans are defined by social issues to the exclusion of all the rest of Reagan’s agenda. If Powell feels alienated by that, it’s not because he’s black, and it’s not because he moved away from the party. The party moved away from him.

Comment by Ames

When I hear the sheep of the pied piper talk about lack of experience it would be laughable if this man wasn’t so scary with his ideas for the country. What is Obama’s leadership in anything other than leadership training in ACORN? I will agree that he taught the Chicago Al Capone politics very well to ACORN’S future get out the vote leaders. Also, how does Powell know that Obama is a christian when Obama himself said he sat in Reverand Wrights church for 20 years but did not know what Wright preached. He is either lying or way to stupid to be president. I would like for Powell or any of the cult followers of Obama to answer this question- Is Obama lying about Wright or is he to stupid to understand the sermons? As for taxes, the top 5% now pay 54.4% of all income tax. This is according to the 2006 IRS report. Obama says he is going to reduce taxes on the middle class, but in a symbolic vote in the senate on March 13, 2008 he voted to reject a move to extend the Bush tax cuts for the middle class. In other words, if your married and filing jointly and earning between $55,000 and $75,000 yearly, according to the IRS if the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire, as Obama voted for, your tax liability would roughly increase by $2250 per year. Obama says he would give this same group an $1100 tax cut, thus taking $1150 more of your money and calling it a tax cut for you, the middle class. What a man of style and substance and BS.

Comment by DE

Powell went before the United Nations and perpetuated a fraud about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. I would think Obama would not want his endorsement since Powell pushed for the war in Iraq. I can’t stand the hypocrisy. I don’t know what Obama stands for.

Comment by Maria

I have it on good information that Obama fathered two black children.

Comment by James F

It is good to see all these great points. I wish these Obama zombies would wake up and realize he is a potential disaster for this country. McCain is not Bush and is the only politician that reaches across the isle. The Dems are going to be controlling the House 60/40, so Obama will pass all his liberal ideas(which in turn will bankrupt our country).

Comment by Brandon

Gen. Wesley Clark testified on Sept. 26, 2002 before the House Armed Services Committee, quote-”there’s no doubt that Sadaam Hussein is a threat, yes he has chemical and biological weapons, there is no question that there have been contacts between Iraq and Al-Qaida”. Clark is not exactly a Bush supporter. Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Al Gore, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, Madeline Albright, Sandy Berger, Howard Dean, Jay Rockefeller,Carl Levin, Tom Dashle,Bob Graham, Robert Byrd, Henry Waxman, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd-these are just a few of the democrats that are on record stating in speeches to the public and testimony in congress that it was a FACT that Sadaam Hussein had WMD’S. Clinton’s administration told the incoming Bush administration that Iraq had WMD’s. Germany,France,Britain,China, Russia all said Iraq had WMD’S. Why is it that none of these people are accused of perpetuating a fraud for making these statements starting in 1998, BEFORE BUSH, through 2003 DURING BUSH?

Comment by DE

Well Brandon it seems a little funny that as long as powell says all the right things that you like to hear. He is ok. As to Obama chaanging his mind, that is a good thing. Maybe if that bonehead Pres. Bush, I am sure you voted for both times would have changed his mind, we proberly wouldn’t be in the situatiion we are in

Comment by Maurice

Maurice: “proberly” isn’t a word. I voted for Kerry in 2004, and I was 16 in 2000 (couldn’t vote). I’ve always considered Colin Powell to be a strategy of the Bush years. I liked him even when he said the wrong things; I just felt sorry for him, because I knew his strings were being pulled.

Comment by Ames

If Kerry or Gore was president, how do you know if worse stuff would have happened. You are correct, I voted for Bush 2 times and he duped Conservatives. He is just as bad as a Democrat(other than over taxing people). Also, I could give a crap about Powell. If he endorsed McCain, I would care less. I am just pointing out that he is a hypocrite. What has he ever done that is so great? Now if Condi Rice supported Barack, then I would be upset.

Comment by Brandon

Honestly, I can’t believe that people are stupid enough to bring up the birth certificate crap any more. As it turns out, there was a birth announcement in the local paper contemporaneously to his birth. So, for it to be a fraud, Obama not only would have to fake his birth certificate, but also travel back in time to place a notice in the Honolulu paper. If he has those kind of super powers, there’s just no way to stop him!

Comment by Mark B

Colin Powell is ten times the public servant that Condi Rice will ever be. He’s a war hero who commanded our soldiers abroad in Gulf War I, and he was a plainspoken “straight talker” on foreign relations when Clinton was in office. Condi is a yes-woman to Bush.

Comment by Ames

To # 10, posing as my name…
Yes.. Barack Obama opposes NAFTA…
he’s more interested in providing tax breaks to companies who KEEP jobs here in America. His whole domestic policy is wrapped around benefiting the American people, and providing them money to become consumers again. During Clinton, we taxes increased with the rate of inflation, this didn’t seem like a problem then.. did it? When’s the last time you’ve seen mimimum wage increase?… huh? Clinton administration, wasn’t it?
When we start to rebuild our infratructure to provided heavy emphasis on Green technology beneficial to our environment, i.e. new roads with bike paths in mind, outdated bridges, wind-mills on land and out to sea, the opening of plants related to wind-mill technology, the power from electric sun-panels that the sun states of Arizona, New Mexico, and California can generate is astronomical, clean-coal technology, high-speed railways from city to city, light-rail following the lead from cities like Charlotte, and Phoenix, these are all jobs that YOU CANNOT OUTSOURCE!!!! Dont’ you get it!? This is a reinvestment project on a grand scale, and the labor force is simply standing idley by awaiting our next President, Barack Obama.

Comment by Daniel

As for calling Obama a ’socialist’, it’s Bush who is nationalizing the banks. To be fair, both McCain and Obama voted for the enabling legislation.

Comment by Mark B

DE,

Do you know what Rev. Wright preached over the 35+ yrs. he served his community; or do you just know what the media fed you with continuous, very short excerpts, of his sermons? Are you aware that Wright also served his country as a United States marine; and that he was part of the medical team that tended to President Lyndon B. Johnson? Are you aware that Wright has been a professor at Chicago Theological Seminary, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and other educational institutions? And that he has received a Rockefeller Fellowship and seven honorary doctorate degrees, including from Colgate University, Valparaiso University, United Theological Seminary and Chicago Theological Seminary. Wright was named one of Ebony magazine’s top 15 preachers. He was also awarded the first Carver Medal by Simpson College in January 2008, to recognize Wright as “an outstanding individual whose life exemplifies the commitment and vision of the service of George Washington Carver.”

Am I saying that Rev. Wright’s comments were not divisive or a bleak perspective on America? No, I’m saying that he is not the monster that the media portrayed him to be. Rev. Wrights comments were a result of his personal experience as a black man in America.

I too fell into the trap that Rev. Wright did. I have been a victim of racism on a multitude of occasions. My first horrible, memorable experience was as an elementary school student chased home by grown white men with baseball bats, angry that black children were attending the same school as their white children. One man actually spit on me…a seven year old child. And I am not a product of the sixties; I am only 35yrs. old.

I too felt a deep distrust of America; I did not feel as though I was considered equal in the land of the free. I did not think that America included me; America was white and racist and would never change.

Remember the controversial comment Michelle Obama made, saying that this was the first time she was truly proud of her country? I can tell you that this is the first time I have felt that my country truly values me. I would have never thought in a million years that a black man would be considered a serious candidate for the highest position of the land.

This campaign has made me take a hard look at myself. I now understand that my perception of America was dated, and unfair. I allowed my negative experiences to blind me to the fact that our society has changed. I was a victim of the very same mentality that fueled Rev. Wright’s divisive statements.

I have been liberated, not by Barack Obama himself, but by the multitude of people, regardless of race, religion, or gender that have banded together to move America in a more positive direction. I am an American! You just don’t know what this campaign has done for me, and many more Americans like me.

I have become the voice and champion of America to many of my friends who are still lost in their memories and victim to their past negative experiences. They are just waiting for America to swallow Obama whole. Listening for the gunshot…saying that America will never let a black man be president. And I must admit that these unfounded attacks on his character, the absurd notion that he is a terrorist, non-citizen looking to single handedly destroy the fabric of America (You know…Like W. did), is trying to tear down my new found pride in my country. But I will not allow it…Yes we absolutely can! Yes we absolutely will…and we will do it together, as proud citizens of the best country on earth!

Go America, Go Obama! And thank all of you out there who have lifted this weight off my shoulders and have ignited my soul. Some out there are still clouded by prejudice, but this election has shown that THEY are the real minorities.

Jeanne,

Great Post,

The only thing I can add to your comment which you so well laid out is “WE WERE FORCE TO KNOW THEM NOW IS THE TIME FOR THEM TO TRULY KNOW US AND WHO WE ARE” COLOR IS BEAUTIFUL AND MAKES UP THE RAINBOW THAT IS WHO WE ARE PEOPLE OF COLOR. Is it not ironic when we see the rainbow and are remembered of GOD’S promise. THE TIME IS NOW………

You should write that as an editorial to every major newspaper in the country. It’s perfect.

He never forgot and forgave President Bush’s preference for dr.Rice.
People like do not convince anybody and rather seein as despicable. Mr.Powell does not add anymore to mr.Barack Hussein Obama but reaffirm more the bad concept that many republicans had of his personality.

Comment by Hercules Mulligan

And.. what is the color of the rainbow in Rwanda, Somalia, Sierre Leone, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Kenya et al?
No people, regardless of color have live in more freedom and opportunities than in this United States of America.
Proof of it? Even “messianics” type like reverend Wright, who damned America did not have the guts and the sincerity to pack up and look for sanctuary in…. ‘rainbow lands’. In fact they did not see it but the true rainbow has always been America; much more COMPARED with certain ‘rainbow lands’ The rest, empty talk.
In the United States and through the english language a real classic language from which everybody services we accessed Chemestry, Physics, Mathematics, Technology

Way to go Jeanne indeed.

Comment by Ames

My opinion of Powell was that he was the only one who made decisions outside of the neo-conservative viewpoint. Everyone else had an agenda and it always sounded like Powell was the one person who took a step back and would argue even though it made him unpopular inside the White House, and eventually was the main reason he was ousted.

In regards to the UN speech…he trusted the information the FBI gave him and what Bush assured him of. He trusted him, he admitted the mistake when he found out, spoke out to set things straight, and spoke of his concerns about the administration. Like do you people really think that Powell was a secret Democrat who was waiting to criticize the administration? No. He was part of it, a believer, he became disillusoned by what he saw in the White House, and now tries to speak out against those things.

This is something that I don’t think the rest of the administration will never have the character to do.

Comment by Oneiroi

Perhaps Mulligan would like to access a book on English grammar. Spelling, puctuation and subject verb agreement go a long way towards providing meaning in written discourse.

“from which everybody services we accessed . . . and et ceteras ad infinitum.”

Comment by Queen of the Zulus

I continue to find the conservative hallucinations regarding Obama’s birty certificate amazing, in light of the fact that McCain was born in Panama, and is patently not eligible to serve as president.

Comment by Green Eagle

I think they’re both eligible; someone actually sued McCain, and the suit got tossed on standing grounds. The fact that the GOP continues to press the Obama case, when only one left-wing nut cared enough to sue McCain, indicates how worried they really are.

Comment by Ames

I still have to laugh at Americans who simply won’t admit they did something wrong.

Why do people support “poor poor” Colin Powell when he is the man who knowingly lied to the UN and the world to get us into a War with Iraq?

If Powell is one of the “good people” why didn’t he quit on principle when forced to lie to the UN and even saying “this is bullshit” to what he had to read?

Why do some people “forgive” their exhaulted leaders when they do horrible acts and say,”Oh…but he’s actually a really nice, smart person.”

It’s complete BS and proves some people simply refuse to acknowledge reality: Mr. Powell is as much a war criminal as George W. Bush, Dick(head) Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld. Every bit the war criminal.

Comment by rob

Maybe Bush would surround himself with good people… but Gore was, of his own merits, a good person. Why settle for secondhand talent?

Very well put. I’m reading Angler now, and it’s as good as Gellman’s earlier work. Like BG, I can never fully forgive Powell for his Day of Shame, especially since, while he was lied to on some points, he also knew some of what he was saying was BS.

However, his section about being Muslim was very good, and his endorsement can’t hurt.
