A Brief Note on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Sadly, today has been busy. Posts will resume tomorrow, but in the meantime, consider this: when Obama lifts the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research on Monday, the conservative cry will be that stem cell research destroys human embryos. While technically correct, embryonic stem cell research is no more destructive than in vitro fertilization. In fact, stem cell research does little more “destructive” than take embryos already slated for destruction after outlasting their usefulness in IVF procedures. To oppose one consistently requires opposing the other. It’ll be curious to see how many conservative groups take a principled stand – as Bush actually did, terrifyingly enough – when doing so would require them to oppose options for infertile couples.
