To listen to the last few weeks of Republican “debate” on health care, you’d think that America had finally encountered a serious flaw in democratic theory: an uninformed electorate, full of vitriol but not much else — “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” Good for Senator McCaskill for showing the poise, decorum, and disgust that these people so rightly deserve.
Side note: who brings a gun to a town hall meeting? More importantly, who wears a gun to a protest, while prominently displaying some of the more violent passages in Thomas Jefferson’s writings (full quote: “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants”)? Clearly Glenn Beck was right to ask his viewers not to go on a killing spree — but how many talk show hosts, ever, have had to make that plea?
