It's not like the Maccabeans were all saints and martyrs, either; the whole reason for Antiochus's persecutions was a raging civil war between the Traditionalist and the Hellenizing factions in Judaea. So, there's that, too.

(By the way, I assume you know that your picture shows the Roman destruction of Jerusalem about 230 years after the Maccabeans. ;-) )

On that note, I've really been wondering what the legal precedent was regarding the Catholic-affiliated programs and contraceptives. Have there been any other big settled cases for if, for example, a Christian Scientist organization was expected to provide some level of health care for their workers? Or is there any non-health related issue where a religious organization refused to pay for something due to conscience (for example, could a pacifist-affiliated hospital stipulate that any of its tax revenues cannot be used for warfare)?

I've never understood how that 'God-given Constitution' theory even makes sense internally. What happens when the Constitution is amended, for example? Is that a new instance of divine inspiration each time it happens, or is it only the rights in the original document (such as they are) that are sacred?

And why even include an amendment procedure in the first place? If the original document was divinely inspired, it would presumably be perfect as it was.
