Unfortunately, it’s that time of life — in a little over a week, I’ll be taking the bar exam, along with the eight billion other new lawyers that New York state apparently needs. Because this requires cramming a lifetime’s worth of useless knowledge into my brain, I won’t be able to keep up with this site, until it’s over. I regret this decision immensely. I don’t think I’ve missed a day, between me and co-bloggers, in at least six months. But it has to be done. Please don’t remove us from your feed readers, though, because we’ll be back in a little over a week.
In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful summer. Did you know that the fact that it’s a little cooler than previous summers basically disproves global warming? I heard it at RedState, and from some Republican congressmen. Good thing one nonconforming data point obviates a trend! Phew! Haha, dodged that bullet!
Seriously, though, enjoy your week! And — incidentally — if any of you would fancy a position as guest blogger, for a week, or for a few posts, feel free to let me know. I’d be happy to fill the void with new talent. Just e-mail submissionstoacandidworld@gmail.com.
Oh — and wish me luck!
If you have any recommendations to enhance readability, and know your CSS, we’d appreciate your help! The current sheet is below the line: Continue reading
Thanks to everyone for bearing with a rough transition. My esteemed co-writer deserves even more of your thanks, for updating broken image links…. she’s basically a hero.
We’ve used the move back to WordPress to take advantage of newer, sleeker themes, more easily workable with new widgets and such. Although I kind of liked “Masthead,” the three-columned monstrosity we used today, it turns out it was basically a disaster, and everyone hated it. We’d like to avoid that in the future…
So please, your candid feedback on the new theme, and the new site design. Let us know what if anything needs to be changed!
UPDATE: Move complete! We’re now 100% hosted on WordPress.com, which means stability, for one, among other wonderful things. To help us rebuild our statistics here, please visit us and tell your friends – we’ll appreciate it! – and link, as our Technorati authority is still split between two different but equivalent sites. Bummer.
A few problems will persist for a while. Posts between August of 2008 and today may not display images. I’m working backwards to fix them one by one – yes, it sucks – and I’m currently through May of this year. All pictures are back on this server, so that’s step one. Step two’s going to suck though.
Also, for the next day or so, some attempts to access the site may fail, or redirect to the old site. That’ll fade and eventually disappear within seventy-two hours.
Thank you to the many readers who’ve stuck with us through epic Dreamhost fails, server moves, etcetera. We hope you still enjoy it here. Please, please tell us what you think of the new theme: it’s a radical departure, but until told otherwise, I think it kinda works.

Dear users – we’re in the process of switching to WordPress hosting. We’ve had it with DreamHost, their lies, and their useless-but-vaguely-funny status blog! Goodbye forever!
It may take some time for the servers to realign. Until then, keep visiting here, and maybe don’t expect, ahem, “content,” so much for the next few days. Keep checking back though!
I would NOT continue to comment here, as they won’t be saved. If you’d like to keep up with the continuing debates – they are manifold – visit here. You can also go there to check out our plans for what the new site will look like – and either comment on the first post available there, or tweet us @DemocracyInUSA to let us know how you like it! Thank you all for your patience during this random outage.
Thanks to server outages, along with various and sundry other matters, we’ve been “off the air” for a while now. In an effort to catch up, and in the spirit of a good but often overlooked Simpsons episode, please enjoy this grab-bag of various news stories:
We’re glad to be back. Thanks to you loyal readers, who lend us your intellect and vitality daily, for sticking in there.
Our apologies, but DreamHost is really dropping the ball lately. If you’re having trouble reading the site, we’re having much more trouble writing things to put on the site! Please forgive this unusually light content week, and we’ll be back soon.
Let’s pretend nothing important is happening in the world. Go spend time with someone important!
Thanks to Didionsmommy for taking over the site for the weekend while I was on vacation – it almost feels wrong to take a vacation while the rest of the country is in such dire peril, but hey, maybe that sector of the economy is in even more dire need of stimulation…? That’s what I’ll tell myself. In any event, please enjoy this little slice of Vermont:
But seriously folks. Now more than ever, it’s time to take stock of how fortunate we really are. Just by living in this great country, we can count ourselves among the freest of the human race – yes, Bill Kristol, we lib’ruls are proud of our country too - and the richest, regardless of our employment or “class” status (top 5% at least). For those of us still employed, or awaiting employment, life is even better. Especially when life is hard for so many of our countrymen, we should remember and give thanks for those fortunes we still enjoy.
As surely as the holiday season brings happiness and relaxation, for those of us still entangled in the academic world, it also brings stress, late nights, and a truly discomforting number of textbooks. Common to both situations, though, is a tendency to restrict free time for better or worse. Therefore, though the “sideblog” feature provided an opportunity to showcase more major news events per day during election season, we’ve decided that it should be the first feature trimmed to conserve the time of our two writers, and not tax the attention of our readers. The sideblog feature will be back, no doubt, after the New Year, but until then, happy holiday season to one and all, and good luck on exams to we few, we happy few. Until then, please feel free to comment on this thread with any exciting, developing, and uncovered news stories – we love tips.
Good news everyone! The hosting servers we use seem to be ridiculously broken lately, and today is no exception. If you can’t get to the site a couple times today, please don’t give up; I’m yelling at Dreamhost to fix it at this very moment. Thanks for your patience.
